NINETEEN

A Glimpse of the Past

Jax’s cold and rough hand wrapped around mine, and his eyes never left me as he shook it firmly.

When he let go, I asked, “So now what?”

An unforced laugh left his mouth. “You’re not a patient one, are you?”

“Not when I’m freezing and desperate for answers.”

“Fair enough.” He crossed his arms. “Where would you like me to begin?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe start with the part about me being from another planet?”

Jax smirked, amused with my sarcasm. “Like I mentioned before, you and your brother Cyrus were born on a planet called Aroonyx.”

“About that,” I said, squishing up my face in a distasteful expression. “What kind of name is Aroonyx?”

“What kind of name is Earth?”

I paused—unable to answer the simple question—then rolled my eyes because once again, Jax’s quick tongue left me stumbling over my words.

“Shall I continue?”

Annoyed, I waved my hand in agreement.

“Aroonyx differs greatly from Earth. One of the main differences between the two planets is—”

“Jax,” I interrupted, bobbing up and down from the cold, “as you know, my level of patience is pretty low, so can we skip the history lesson on Aroonyx?”

“Noted.” His brow raised. “But next time you ask a question, make sure you specify the details you want answered.”

“Do you speak to everyone like this?”

“What do you mean?”

“Like this,” I added, motioning to his statue-like appearance.

He glanced down at himself. “I’m not following your skewed observation.”

“This is what I’m talking about.” I continued to motion at him with my hand. “Is there a reason you speak to me like I’m your subordinate, or is this just how you communicate?”

Irritated by my question, Jax closed his hands into tight fists as he moved closer. “I have my reasons, none of which concern you, and yes, this is how I speak to everyone.”

“Okay, then later today when I get home, I’ll research how to communicate with introverted assholes.”

Unable to hide the smile that grew across his face, Jax found my eyes and whispered, “Please let me know what you discover, I’m dying to find out.”

I glared, trying to keep a straight face.

“Now, I know you have lots of unanswered questions flying through that mind of yours, but don’t feel pressed to ask them all today. We have time, though not as much as I would like.”

“What are you, a Sphinx with a riddle?” I asked, dumbfounded by his cryptic way of speaking. “We have time, but not as much as you would like? What the hell does that mean?”

“I’m unaware of the word Sphinx.”

My hands fell to my side. “What?”

“You called me a Sphinx with a riddle? I don’t know what that means.”

“Clearly, he isn’t from here,” I thought, observing his innocent reaction.

“It’s just an expression,” I clarified, brushing him off, “but that’s beside the point. Why do you say we have little time?”

Entertained by my anxious posture, the corners of Jax’s eyes creased as he smiled once more. “Well, if you would’ve allowed me to explain the history of Aroonyx, then you might have understood the time reference.
